Golden Software improves plotting flexibility and ease of use in latest version of Grapher software

Transparency is now supported for 3D plot types in Grapher Beta.

Golden, Colorado, December 8, 2021 – Golden Software, a developer of affordable software for the visualization and analysis of various data sets, has improved the flexibility of the plotting functionality in the latest version of its scientific graphics package, Grapher â„¢.

Grapher is widely used by scientists and engineers in oil and gas operations, environmental consulting, climate research, mineral exploration, and academic activities. The package offers more in-depth information on various datasets, including chemical, physical, geological, and geospatial data, across 80 different 2D and 3D plotting types.

“In the new version of Grapher released today, we have focused on providing users with a better overall experience with greater flexibility in how they plot data and present results,” said Justine Carstairs, Head of Grapher product.

The latest version of Grapher, which is downloadable this week for all users with active maintenance contracts, includes these improvements:

Data filter – With this time saving tool, users can add multiple exclusion and inclusion filters combined with logical conditions and math functions to control the data that will be plotted. This tool gives users a better ability to analyze datasets, especially larger ones, without manually modifying their spreadsheets.

Auto-scatter label tool – Grapher automatically eliminates cluttered plots by moving data labels so they don’t overlap. Previously a tedious manual process, this feature is especially useful when resizing plots for publishing or presenting grouped data.

Reorganization of class plots – With a simple drag-and-drop functionality, users can now control and change the order in which text classes and their classification symbols appear in the associated legend.

Percent label option – This new feature allows users to automatically convert data values from decimal to percentages without performing manual conversion in the worksheet. Plot and axis labels also change to percentage formats when this format is used.

Updated status bar and mouse cursor position – Users can see the position of the mouse cursor in axis units in the status bar at the bottom of the screen when the user hovers the cursor over a point on the graph. The sections of the status bar are now also resizable.

Align and distribute objects to margin tools – For easier publishing, printing, and viewing of plots, these layout tools make it easy to align graphics, text, drawn objects, and shapes with page margins.

Improved spreadsheet manager – This enhancement reduces clutter by automatically closing data files that are not used or linked in the project, a feature particularly beneficial for users who edit source data files in their plots.

Scan in time / date format – Useful for projects representing changes over time, Grapher automatically converts time values from the commonly used Julian format to the user’s preferred Date / Time format on the plot axes.

Looking ahead to 2022 with an eye on improved usability, the Golden Software development team is working on new features, functionality and improvements for the next version of Grapher. Users with active maintenance can try out these new features by downloading Grapher Beta. Users are encouraged to send their comments and / or questions directly to the Golden Software development team as they use the beta in their daily workflows.

Grapher beta features include:

  • Multiple axis breakage allows users to place as many breaks in the X or Y axis as they want, primarily to eliminate long axis sections.
  • Color gradient transparency is now supported for 3D plots such as 3D Surface and 3D Bubble plots. Transparency can be applied based on Z values and is supported when exporting to your preferred image formats.
  • Inverse / reciprocal scales, such as 1 / X can now be plotted on linked axes to show inverse relationships of data sets.
  • Stacked and adjacent options have long been available for bar charts in Grapher, but these options are now available for histograms, making it easier to view and compare histogram distributions across multiple data sets.
